In Upwaltham, Sussex Funeral Services will assist you with the funeral plans following the death of a loved one.
We have a variety of options ranging from our traditional funerals to the simplest, ‘no fuss’ options, that hopefully will suit your needs.
Our ‘No-Fuss’ funerals and ‘Direct cremation’ or Burial’ options differ significantly from the regular funeral option. These simple alternatives give you the option of having a memorial or special ceremony at a later time.
Not only is a direct cremation a simple occasion but it can also be private and worry-free in terms of finance. This is more affordable for many people. We still maintain the highest of standards, we still ensure that dignity for your loved one is upheld, and that we conduct ourselves in the most respectful manner. Our company ethos is defined as ‘Caring, Compassion and Choice’
Our choice of “direct cremation” will help you if you want a more limited, private funeral arrangement or indeed if you worry about affordability.
Our sensitive staff will gladly help you throughout, while preserving dignity and discretion. The direct cremation means a simple service that involves us collecting your loved one from wherever they died, bringing back to our premises and keeping them safe until the day of their cremation. On that day, we simply transport them, in a fitting coffin, to the crematorium of our choosing, which is typically Woodvale Crematorium. The cremation takes place on that day and the cremated remains are usually available to be collected on the next working day.
This simple farewell is appropriate for those who want, of their own choice and either are recorded in a will or dying wishes, to be cremated without a service, or have verbally passed it on to their loved ones, perhaps after donating their body organ for example.
This may be that, for financial reasons, direct cremation is the best option, because the person who died did not prepare financially for his own death or, perhaps, the person left to manage is not in a position to be able to pay for the regular service. The deceased person may have had no relatives or friends who have survived them, or be able to attend due to distance and in this case, it seems inappropriate to provide a conventional service when a direct cremation would seem more suitable.
£799 plus expenses (Cremation Charge plus Doctor Payment if applicable) – this choice provides the following:
Indeed, our “Direct Burial” service is also known as the “Direct to Graveside” service. A similar service, the dead is taken to a graveyard and buried, without a service, rather than being taken to the crematorium.
Burial selection starts from Price £1,000 including disbursements (burial plot and interment fee) – This option comes with the following:
The principle of direct cremation or burial is for little to no hassle to all parties, with a view to keeping issues to a minimum and, in particular, to keeping costs to a minimum. We find that very few people even like to see the deceased. Maybe 1 in 10 would wish to come to see their loved one.
In that situation, we can provide personal care for your loved one for an extra fee, i.e. washing and dressing the body either in their own clothing or in sheets of calico cotton (we tend not to embalm or use unnecessarily intrusive procedures, unless we are requested to do so by law or formal request).
Going back to the concept of little or no fuss on all sides, and again, with a view to keeping things to a minimum, including costs, we normally ask clients to collect the ashes directly from the crematorium. Or, instead, they may choose to have the ashes spread in the remembrance garden in the crematorium.
The ashes can be delivered to your door for an extra fee. A variety of options are available when it comes to urns. We usually advise clients to look on the internet, given the choice of urns available, and with our own individual tastes, we feel that choosing an urn is a more personal thing to do, and since there is usually no rush to do so, you can do all this in your time from the comfort of your own home.
Simply give is a call.
We can normally do it all over the phone, followed up by email – we can video conference with you and if necessary, we could consider visiting you locally, in your own home. We can’t do this for everybody, but we do so if you’re having trouble getting out and leaving your home. But start by calling us to discuss your requirements.
Our caring and ethical method of planning a funeral or cremation is personally maintained by our funeral director, Philip, and his Wife Sallie, both of whom aim to provide you with a package that suits your needs completely. Sussex Funeral Services are very proud to offer transparent pricing to uphold our ethical and moral codes of conduct. We believe this openness is extremely important, offering a distinct alternative to some of the other funeral companies. Sussex Funeral Services is one of the few Brighton Funeral homes who wish you to be aware of all our funeral arrangements in the spirit of integrity and transparency.
Our direct funeral options in burial and cremation are simple and dignified, giving you and your family a more appropriate and affordable option. Knowing how tremendous upheaval a losing loved one can be, we are devoted to giving you the right funeral for your circumstance. Our staff are experienced, caring and understanding of how difficult planning a funeral can be for a family or person. Our attention is on honesty and integrity, and those suffering bereavements are all too often unaware of affordable and dignified direct funeral services that exist to help mitigate budgetary costs throughout this complicated and emotionally stressful period.
The comments made by our clients are of great value to us.
We would like some to share with you.
“Our very beloved family friend passed away in Hove on February 21. We went on the website to look for a respectable funeral director in Hove since we reside in the north of England.
We chose Sussex Funeral Services’ Phillip . By the time we arrived in Hove, all the burial plans had been rendered to our satisfaction and all other support we wanted was catered to a very high level. You supported us on a really sad day, allowing us the chance to recognise and appreciate a loved one, you handled our mother with such respect and dignity. – K. Sherlock.

The price difference reflects the fact that those collected from a private home or nursing home resting in our premises for a period of time (sometimes up to a week or more ) until they are taken to the crematorium, whereas those from hospitals and coroners are usually only with us for a few days.
