We Provide Direct Cremation & Burial Services

Direct Cremation

Direct cremation is not just a simple ceremony but it can also be private and worry-free financially. It’s more affordable to a lot of people. We still perform to the highest standards; we also guarantee that your loved one’s dignity will be upheld and we are work in the most respectful manner. Our company’s philosophy is as ‘Caring, Compassion and Choice’

What is Direct Cremation?

Our ‘direct cremation’ option will be more favourable to those who worry about affordability or wish to have a smaller and more private funeral arrangement.

Our compassionate staff will always support you with dignity and discretion. Direct cremation means that we will pick up your beloved from wherever they died and get them back to our premises to keep them safe until the day they are cremated. On that day, we simply transfer them to the crematorium of our choice, usually Woodvale Crematorium, in Brighton, in a suitable coffin. The cremation then takes place on that day, with the cremated ashes usually ready for you to collect on the next day.

Who is a direct cremation suited to?

Such a simple farewell is suited to those who have opted to be cremated without a service, themselves, through their own choice and either documented in a will or dying wishes, or they may have relayed it verbally to their loved ones, maybe following donation of their body organs for example.

For finance purposes, it may be that a direct cremation is best suited, because either the person who died did not plan himself financially or the person left to manage is not capable of paying for a conventional service. It may be that the deceased person didn’t have any family or friends having outlived them, or able to attend due to distance and, in that case, it seems inappropriate to have a traditional service, when a direct cremation might seem more fitting.

How Much does a Direct Cremation cost and what does it include?

From £799, plus disbursements (cremation fee, plus Doctor Fee if applicable) – this option includes the following:

  • Collection of the body from a place within 10 miles (extra charges may be incurred for out of hours).
  •   Collection of the body from a location within a 10-mile radius (out of hours will be charged extra).
  • Conveying to the crematorium of our choosing in our own car.
  • Coffin ideal for cremation will be made available.

Is there a burial alternative?

Yes, our ‘Direct Burial’ is also regarded to as the ‘Direct to Graveside’ service. A similar service but rather than being taken to the crematorium, the deceased is taken to a cemetery and buried, without a service.

How much is the Direct Burial?

Burial option price starts at £1,000 plus disbursements (burial plot and interment fee) – This option comes with the following:

  • Collection within 10 miles (extra hour costs apply).
  • Collection to our Brighton & Hove Cemetery in Hearsette.
  • A coffin that is appropriate for burial.

What about dressing our loved one or viewings?

For all sides, the notion of immediate cremation or burial is to reduce fuss, avoid issues and, in particular, keeping costs to a minimum.   We notice that very few people even like to view. Possibly only 1 in 10 would like to see their loved one.

In this case, for an additional charge, we are in a position to give personal care to your loved one, i.e. washing and dressing the body either in own clothes or in calico cotton sheets (we tend not to embalm or use unnecessarily intrusive treatments unless we are required to do so by legislation or by formal request).

What happens after the cremation?

Returning to the idea of little or no hassle for both sides, and again, in order to keep things to a minimum, including prices, we usually ask clients to collect the ashes from the crematorium on their own.   Or they might choose to have the ashes scattered in the crematorium remembrance garden.

There is a chance that the ashes will be shipped to your door at a further cost. There are a variety of options open when it comes to urns. We usually advise clients to look on the internet, given the choice of available urns, and we feel that picking an urn is a more personal thing to do, given individual tastes, and since there is generally no rush to do so, you can do all this at your own convenience from the comfort of your home.

How do I arrange cremation?

Simply give is a call.

Usually, we would do that all over the phone, followed by email – we can also do a video conference with you, and if necessary, we might discuss meeting you personally, in your own house. We won’t do this for everybody, so can consider that if you’re having trouble getting out and about your own house. But you can first get in touch with us to discuss your requirements.

Testimonials

The reviews from our customers are of great importance to us.

We’d like to share them with you.

“Our good family friend passed away in Hove on 21 February. We went to the website to find a respectable funeral director in Hove, as we reside in the north of England.

We selected Phillip of Sussex Funeral Services. By the time we arrived in Hove, all the arrangements for the funeral had been made to our satisfaction, and any other help we needed was catered for to a very high standard. On a really sad day, you assisted us, allowing us time to consider and remember a loved one, you handled our mother with great reverence and integrity. – K. Sherlock.
