We Provide Direct Cremation & Burial Services

Direct Cremation

Direct cremation not just a simple event, but it can also be private and easy on the finances. It’s more affordable for many people. We also uphold the highest standards; we continue to safeguard the dignity of your loved and that we conduct ourselves in the most respectful manner. Our company philosophy is defined as ‘Caring, Compassion and Choice’

What is Direct Cremation?

Our ‘direct cremation’ option can help those who may need to think about affordability or want a smaller and more private arrangement for funeral.

Throughout this time our we will be there for you to help you, while maintaining dignity and discretion. Direct cremation means a simple service which involves gathering your loved one from wherever they died, bringing them back to our premises and keeping them safe until cremation. On that day, we simply transport them, in a fitting coffin, to the crematorium of our choosing, which is typically Woodvale Crematorium. The cremation then happens on that day, and the cremation remains usually ready for collection on the next working day.

Who is a direct cremation suited to?

Such a modest departure is appropriate to those who have elected to be cremated without service, by their own choice and either recorded in will or dying wishes, or who may have communicated it orally to their loved ones, perhaps after the donation of their body organs.

For finance purposes, it may be that a direct cremation is best suited, because either the person who died did not plan himself financially or the person left to manage is not capable of paying for a conventional service. The deceased person may have had no family or friends who have survived them or be able to attend due to distance, and in that case, it may be unfitting to have a regular service when a direct cremation might seem more appropriate.

How Much does a Direct Cremation cost and what does it include?

£799 plus expenses (Cremation Charge plus Doctor Payment if applicable) – this choice provides the following:

  • Removal of the body from a venue within 10 miles (extra fees would be paid for out of hours).
  •   Collection of the body from a location within a 10-mile radius (out of hours will be charged extra).
  • Conveying in our chosen car to the crematorium of our choice.
  • A coffin appropriate for cremation shall be given.

Is there a burial alternative?

Sure, there is – our ‘Direct Burial’ is also called the Direct to Graveside’ service. A similar service but rather than being taken to the crematorium, the deceased is taken to a cemetery and buried, without a service.

How much is the Direct Burial?

Burial choice price begins at £1,000 plus disbursements (burial plot and interment fee) – This option covers the following:

  • Collection within 10 miles (extra hours would be charged).
  • Collection to the Brighton & Hove Cemetery in Hearsette.
  • Burial-fitting coffin.

What about dressing our loved one or viewings?

For all parties, the idea of immediate cremation or burial was for little to No Fuss, with a view to reducing issues and in particular bringing costs down to a minimum.   We discover that very few people really want to view. Perhaps 1 in 10 would like to come to view their loved one.

In which case – For an extra fee we are able to provide personal care of your loved one, i.e. cleansing and dressing the body either in own clothes or in calico cotton sheeting (we prefer not to embalm or use unnecessary invasive treatments, unless we are obliged to do so by law or formal request).

What happens after the cremation?

Returning to the idea of little or no hassle for both sides, and again, in order to keep things to a minimum, including prices, we usually ask clients to collect the ashes from the crematorium on their own. Or, instead, they may choose to have the ashes spread in the remembrance garden in the crematorium.

The ashes can be delivered to your door for an extra fee.   When it comes to urns, there are many options available. We normally encourage clients to search on the internet, considering the range of available urns, and with our own particular preferences, we feel that picking an urn is a more personal thing to do, and as there is generally no rush to do so, you can do all this at your convenient time, from the comfort of your own home.

How do I arrange cremation?

Just call us on phone.

We would usually do it all over the phone, followed by email – we can also do a video conferencing with you and, if required, we will consider visiting you at home. We can’t do this for everybody, but we do so if you’re having trouble getting out and leaving your home. But you can call us first let’s talk about your requirements.

The comments our customers make are of great importance to us.

We’d like to share a few with you.

“Our very close family member died in Hove on 21 February. We went on the website to search for a reputable funeral director in Hove as we live in the north of England.

We selected Phillip of Sussex Funeral Services. By the time we landed in Hove, all the burial arrangements had been carried out to our satisfaction, and all other help we wanted was catered for to a very high level. On a really sad day, you assisted us, allowing us time to consider and remember a loved one, you handled our mother with great reverence and integrity. – K. Sherlock.
