We Provide Direct Cremation & Burial Services

Direct Cremation

Direct cremation is not just a simple ceremony but it can also be private and worry-free financially.   This is more affordable for many people. We take our high standards very seriously; we also guarantee that your beloved’s dignity is upheld and we carry ourselves in the most respectful way. Our company’s philosophy is as ‘Caring, Compassion and Choice’

What is Direct Cremation?

Our ‘direct cremation’ option will be more favourable to those who worry about affordability or wish to have a smaller and more private funeral arrangement.

Our sensitive staff will gladly support you, while upholding dignity and discretion, throughout. Direct cremation means a simple service which involves collecting your loved one from wherever they died, bringing them back to our premises and keeping them safe until their cremation day. On the day, in a suitable coffin, we will simply move them to the crematorium of our choosing, usually the Woodvale Crematorium in Brighton. The cremation then takes place on that day, with the remains being cremated and usually ready to collect by the next working day.

Who is a direct cremation suited to?

Such a simple farewell is suited to those who have opted to be cremated without a service, themselves, through their own choice and either documented in a will or dying wishes, or they may have relayed it verbally to their loved ones, maybe following donation of their body organs for example.

It may be that a direct cremation is the most appropriate for financial reasons, either because the person who died did not prepare financially for their own demise or indeed the person left to arrange is not in a position to be able to pay for a traditional service. It may be that the deceased person did not have any relatives or friends who outlived them , or be able to attend due to distance in this case, it will be inappropriate to provide a conventional service when direct cremation would seem more fitting.

How Much does a Direct Cremation cost and what does it include?

Costs are from £799, plus disbursements which includes cremation fee plus Doctor’s fee where applicable – this option comes with the following:

  • Collection of the body from a location within 10 miles (extra charges will be incurred for out of hours). DURING OFFICE HOURS IS £120
  • Collection of the body from a place within 10 miles (extra charges may be incurred for out of hours).
  • Conveying to a crematorium of our preference in our suitable vehicle.
  • A coffin appropriate for cremation shall be given.

Is there a burial alternative?

Yes, our ‘Direct Burial’ is also regarded to as the ‘Direct to Graveside’ service. A similar service but rather than being taken to the crematorium, the deceased is taken to a cemetery and buried, without a service.

How much is the Direct Burial?

Burial choice price begins at £1,000 plus disbursements (burial plot and interment fee) – This option covers the following:

  • Collection within 10 miles (extra hours would be charged).
  • Conveyance to the Brighton & Hove Burial ground in our Hearsette;
  • Suitable coffin for the burial.

What about dressing our loved one or viewings?

For all parties, the idea of immediate cremation or burial was for little to No Fuss, with a view to reducing issues and in particular bringing costs down to a minimum.   We found out that not many people would really want to view the deceased. Maybe 1 in 10 may wish to come and see their loved one.

In which case – For an extra fee we are able to provide personal care of your loved one, i.e. cleansing and dressing the body either in own clothes or in calico cotton sheeting (we prefer not to embalm or use unnecessary invasive treatments, unless we are obliged to do so by law or formal request).

What happens after the cremation?

Returning to the idea of little or no fuss for both sides, and again, to keep things to a minimum, including expenditures, we usually ask clients to collect the ashes from the crematorium themselves.   Or they might choose to have the ashes scattered in the crematorium remembrance garden.

There is an opportunity, for a small additional cost, to have the ashes shipped to your house. There are a variety of options open when it comes to urns. We normally encourage clients to search on the internet, considering the range of available urns, and with our own particular preferences, we feel that picking an urn is a more personal thing to do, and as there is generally no rush to do so, you can do all this at your convenient time, from the comfort of your own home.

How do I arrange cremation?

Simply give is a call.

Normally, we can do that all over the phone, backed up by email – we can do a video conference with you, and if appropriate, we might consider meeting you personally, in your own house. We can’t do this for everybody, but we do so if you’re having trouble getting out and leaving your home. But you can call us first let’s talk about your requirements.

Testimonials

The comments made by our clients are of great value to us.

We’d like to share them with you.

“A very dear family friend of ours passed away on the 21st of February in Hove. We went on the website to look for a respectable funeral director in Hove since we reside in the north of England.

We selected Phillip of Sussex Funeral Services. By the time we arrived in Hove, all the arrangements for the funeral had been made to our satisfaction, and any other help we needed was catered for to a very high standard. On a very sad day you helped us, giving us time to remember and honour a loved one, you treated our mother with such esteem and respect. – K. Sherlock.
