We Provide Direct Cremation & Burial Services

Direct Cremation

Direct cremation is not just a simple ceremony but it can also be private and worry-free financially. For many people it is more affordable. We still maintain the highest of standards, we still ensure that dignity for your loved one is upheld, and that we conduct ourselves in the most respectful manner. Our company philosophy is defined as ‘Caring, Compassion and Choice’

What is Direct Cremation?

The choice of ‘direct cremation’ will benefit those who may be worrying about affordability or want a smaller and more private funeral arrangement.

Throughout , our sensitive staff will support you while upholding dignity and discretion. Direct cremation means a simple service which involves gathering your loved one from wherever they died, bringing them back to our premises and keeping them safe until cremation. On that day we simply convey them, in a suitable coffin, to the crematorium, of our choice, which is usually Woodvale Crematorium, in Brighton. The cremation then happens on that day, and the cremation remains usually ready for collection on the next working day.

Who is a direct cremation suited to?

This simple farewell is appropriate for those who want, of their own choice and either are recorded in a will or dying wishes, to be cremated without a service, or have verbally passed it on to their loved ones, perhaps after donating their body organ for example.

It may be that a direct cremation is best suited for financial purposes, either the person who died did not prepare financially for their own death or perhaps the person left to manage is not in a position to be able to pay for a conventional service. The deceased person may have had no family or friends who have survived them or be able to attend due to distance, and in that case, it may be unfitting to have a regular service when a direct cremation might seem more appropriate.

How Much does a Direct Cremation cost and what does it include?

From £799, plus disbursements (cremation fee, plus Doctor Fee if applicable) – this option includes the following:

  • Collection of the body from a location within a 10-mile radius (out of hours will be charged extra).
  • Removal of the body from a place within 10 miles (additional fees will be paid for out of hours).
  • Conveying in our chosen car to the crematorium of our choice.
  • Coffin ideal for cremation will be made available.

Is there a burial alternative?

Yes, there is – our ‘Direct Burial’ – also known as a ‘Direct to Graveside’ service. A similar service, but instead of being taken to the crematorium, the body is taken to the graveyard and buried without a service.

How much is the Direct Burial?

Burial option from Price £1,000 plus disbursements (burial plot and interment fee) – This option includes the following:

  • Collection within 10 miles (extra hour costs apply).
  • Conveyance to the Brighton & Hove Burial ground in our Hearsette;
  • Coffin suitable for burial.

What about dressing our loved one or viewings?

For all sides, the notion of immediate cremation or burial is to reduce fuss, avoid issues and, in particular, keeping costs to a minimum.   We notice that very few people even like to view. Possibly only 1 in 10 would like to see their loved one.

In this case, we can provide personal care of your loved one for an additional fee, i.e. washing and dressing the body either in their own clothes or in calico cotton sheets (we tend not to preserve by embalming or use unnecessarily intrusive therapies unless we are required by law or formal request).

What happens after the cremation?

Going back to the concept of little or no fuss on all sides, and again, with a view to keeping things to a minimum, including costs, we normally ask clients to collect the ashes directly from the crematorium. Or, instead, they may opt to scatter the ashes in the memorial garden at the crematorium.

There is an opportunity, for a small additional cost, to have the ashes shipped to your house. There are a variety of options open when it comes to urns. We usually advise clients to look on the internet, given the choice of available urns, and we feel that picking an urn is a more personal thing to do, given individual tastes, and since there is generally no rush to do so, you can do all this at your own convenience from the comfort of your home.

How do I arrange cremation?

Just call us on phone.

We can usually do it all over the phone, followed by email – we can video conferencing with you and we will consider visiting you personally, in your own house, if necessary. We can’t do this for everyone but we can consider it if you have difficulties getting out and about your own home. But you can get started by calling to talk about your requirements.

Testimonials

Comments from our clients are of tremendous value to us.

We’d like to share them with you.

“Our very beloved family friend passed away in Hove on February 21. We went on the website to search for a reputable funeral director in Hove as we live in the north of England.

We selected Phillip of Sussex Funeral Services. By the time we arrived in Hove, all the burial plans had been rendered to our satisfaction and all other support we wanted was catered to a very high level. On a very sad day you helped us, giving us time to remember and honour a loved one, you treated our mother with such esteem and respect. – K. Sherlock.
