We Provide Direct Cremation & Burial Services

Direct Cremation

Not only is direct cremation simple, but it is also be private and financially beneficial. For many people it is more affordable. We continue to maintain the highest standards, we continue to ensure that dignity is upheld for your loved one, and that we conduct ourselves in the most respectful manner possible. Our company ethos is defined as ‘Caring, Compassion and Choice’

What is Direct Cremation?

The choice of ‘direct cremation’ will benefit those who may be worrying about affordability or want a smaller and more private funeral arrangement.

Our compassionate staff will always support you with dignity and discretion. The direct cremation means a simple service that involves us collecting your loved one from wherever they died, bringing back to our premises and keeping them safe until the day of their cremation. On that day, we simply transfer them to the crematorium of our choice, usually Woodvale Crematorium, in Brighton, in a suitable coffin. The cremation then takes place on that day, with the remains being cremated and usually ready to collect by the next working day.

Who is a direct cremation suited to?

Such a humble send-off is suitable for those who have chosen to be cremated without a service, through their own choice and either documented in a will or dying wishes, or they may have verbally relayed it to their loved ones, perhaps following, for example, donation of their body organs.

It may be that for financial reasons a direct cremation is better suited, either the person who has died didn’t prepare financially for their own demise or indeed the person left to arrange is not in a position to be able to pay for a traditional service. The deceased person may have had no relatives or friends who have survived them, or be able to attend due to distance and in this case, it seems inappropriate to provide a conventional service when a direct cremation would seem more suitable.

How Much does a Direct Cremation cost and what does it include?

From £799 including disbursements (Cremation Fee plus Doctor Fee where applicable) – this selection includes the following:

  • Removal of the body from a place within 10 miles (additional fees will be paid for out of hours).
  • Collection of the body from a place within 10 miles (extra charges may be incurred for out of hours).
  • Conveying to the crematorium of our choosing in our own car.
  • A coffin appropriate for cremation shall be given.

Is there a burial alternative?

Yes, there is – our ‘Direct Burial’ – also known as a ‘Direct to Graveside’ service. A similar service, but instead of being taken to the crematorium, the body is taken to the graveyard and buried without a service.

How much is the Direct Burial?

Burial option starting from Price £1,000 in addition to disbursements (burial plot and interment fee) – this service involves the following:

  • Collection within 10 miles (extra hours would be charged).
  • Collection to the Brighton & Hove Cemetery in Hearsette.
  • Suitable coffin for the burial.

What about dressing our loved one or viewings?

For all sides, the notion of immediate cremation or burial is to reduce fuss, avoid issues and, in particular, keeping costs to a minimum. We find that very few people actually want to go through any viewing of the deceased. Maybe 1 in 10 might wish to come and see their loved one.

In which case – For an extra fee we are able to provide personal care of your loved one, i.e. cleansing and dressing the body either in own clothes or in calico cotton sheeting (we prefer not to embalm or use unnecessary invasive treatments, unless we are obliged to do so by law or formal request).

What happens after the cremation?

Getting back to the idea of little or No Fuss for both parties, and again, with a view to keeping things to a minimum, including costs, we usually ask for clients to collect the ashes themselves from the crematorium. Or alternatively they might choose to have the ashes scattered in the garden of remembrance at the crematorium.

The ashes can be delivered to your door for an extra fee. There are several options available for urns. We normally encourage clients to search on the internet, considering the range of available urns, and with our own particular preferences, we feel that picking an urn is a more personal thing to do, and as there is generally no rush to do so, you can do all this at your convenient time, from the comfort of your own home.

How do I arrange cremation?

Simply give is a call.

We would usually do it all over the phone, followed by email – we can also do a video conferencing with you and, if required, we will consider visiting you at home.   We can’t do this for everyone but if you have trouble leaving your house, we can consider coming over. But you can call us first let’s talk about your requirements.

Testimonials

The comments our customers make are of great importance to us.

We would like some to share with you.

“Our very beloved family friend passed away in Hove on February 21. We went to the website to find a respectable funeral director in Hove, as we reside in the north of England.

We selected Phillip of Sussex Funeral Services.   By the time we arrived in Hove, all the preparations for the burial had been done to our satisfaction, and all other support we wanted was of a very high quality. On a really sad day you supported us, allowing us the chance to recognise and support a loved one, you handled our mother with great reverence and dignity. — K. Sherlock.
