We Provide Direct Cremation & Burial Services

Direct Cremation

Not only is direct cremation a simple opportunity but it is also private and worry-free.   This is more affordable for many people. We still perform to the highest standards; we also guarantee that your loved one’s dignity will be upheld and we are work in the most respectful manner. Our company ethos is described as Caring, Compassion and Choice’

What is Direct Cremation?

The choice of ‘direct cremation’ will benefit those who may be worrying about affordability or want a smaller and more private funeral arrangement.

Our sensitive staff will gladly help you throughout, while preserving dignity and discretion. Direct cremation means a simple service which involves collecting your loved one from wherever they died, bringing them back to our premises and keeping them safe until their cremation day. On that day we simply convey them, in a suitable coffin, to the crematorium, of our choice, which is usually Woodvale Crematorium, in Brighton. The cremation takes place on that day and the cremated remains are usually available to be collected on the next working day.

Who is a direct cremation suited to?

Such a simple farewell is suited to those who have opted to be cremated without a service, themselves, through their own choice and either documented in a will or dying wishes, or they may have relayed it verbally to their loved ones, maybe following donation of their body organs for example.

For finance purposes, it may be that a direct cremation is best suited, because either the person who died did not plan himself financially or the person left to manage is not capable of paying for a conventional service. The deceased person may have had no relatives or friends who have survived them, or be able to attend due to distance and in this case, it seems inappropriate to provide a conventional service when a direct cremation would seem more suitable.

How Much does a Direct Cremation cost and what does it include?

From £799, in addition to disbursements (Cremation cost plus Doctor’s cost where appropriate) – this choice includes the following:

  • Removal of the body from a place within 10 miles (additional fees will be paid for out of hours).
  •   Collection of the body from a location within a 10-mile radius (out of hours will be charged extra).
  • Conveying to the crematorium of our choosing in our adapted estate car.
  • A coffin appropriate for cremation shall be given.

Is there a burial alternative?

Sure – our Direct Burial’ – also known as a service called Direct to Graveside’ is available. A similar service, but rather than being cremated, the body is taken to the cemetery and buried without a service.

How much is the Direct Burial?

Burial selection starts from Price £1,000 including disbursements (burial plot and interment fee) – This option comes with the following:

  • Collection within 10 miles (out of hours will incur an extra charge).
  • Conveyance to the Brighton & Hove Burial ground in our Hearsette;
  • A coffin that is appropriate for burial.

What about dressing our loved one or viewings?

For all sides, the notion of immediate cremation or burial is to reduce fuss, avoid issues and, in particular, keeping costs to a minimum.   We find that very few people even like to see the deceased. Maybe 1 in 10 would wish to come to see their loved one.

In which case – For an extra fee we are able to provide personal care of your loved one, i.e. cleansing and dressing the body either in own clothes or in calico cotton sheeting (we prefer not to embalm or use unnecessary invasive treatments, unless we are obliged to do so by law or formal request).

What happens after the cremation?

Going back to the idea of little or no hassle on all sides, and again, with a view to keeping it to a minimum, including expenses, we generally ask clients to collect the ashes directly from the crematorium.   Or they might choose to have the ashes scattered in the crematorium remembrance garden.

There is an opportunity, for a small additional cost, to have the ashes shipped to your house.   A variety of options are available when it comes to urns. We usually advise clients to look on the internet, given the choice of available urns, and we feel that picking an urn is a more personal thing to do, given individual tastes, and since there is generally no rush to do so, you can do all this at your own convenience from the comfort of your home.

How do I arrange cremation?

Just give us a call.

We can usually do it all over the phone, followed by email – we can video conferencing with you and we will consider visiting you personally, in your own house, if necessary. We can’t do this for everybody, but we do so if you’re having trouble getting out and leaving your home. But start by calling us to discuss your requirements.

Testimonials

Our clients’ comments are of much importance to us.

We want to share these with you.

“Our very close family member died in Hove on 21 February. As we live in the north of England, we went on the website to search for a reputable funeral director in Hove.

We chose Sussex Funeral Services’ Phillip . By the time we arrived in Hove, all the arrangements for the funeral had been made to our satisfaction, and any other help we needed was catered for to a very high standard. On a really sad day, you assisted us, allowing us time to consider and remember a loved one, you handled our mother with great reverence and integrity. – K. Sherlock.
