We Provide Direct Cremation & Burial Services

Direct Cremation

Not only is direct cremation simple, but it is also be private and financially beneficial. That is more affordable for many people. We continue to maintain the highest standards, we continue to ensure that dignity is upheld for your loved one, and that we conduct ourselves in the most respectful manner possible. Our company ethos is described as Caring, Compassion and Choice’

What is Direct Cremation?

Our ‘direct cremation’ option will be more favourable to those who worry about affordability or wish to have a smaller and more private funeral arrangement.

Throughout this time our we will be there for you to help you, while maintaining dignity and discretion. Direct cremation means a simple service which involves collecting your loved one from wherever they died, bringing them back to our premises and keeping them safe until their cremation day. On that day, we simply move them to the crematorium of our choosing, normally Woodvale Crematorium, in Brighton, in a suitable coffin. The cremation takes place on that day and the cremated remains are usually available to be collected on the next working day.

Who is a direct cremation suited to?

Such a humble send-off is suitable for those who have chosen to be cremated without a service, through their own choice and either documented in a will or dying wishes, or they may have verbally relayed it to their loved ones, perhaps following, for example, donation of their body organs.

It may be that a direct cremation is best suited for financial purposes, either the person who died did not prepare financially for their own death or perhaps the person left to manage is not in a position to be able to pay for a conventional service. It may be that the deceased person did not have any relatives or friends who outlived them , or be able to attend due to distance in this case, it will be inappropriate to provide a conventional service when direct cremation would seem more fitting.

How Much does a Direct Cremation cost and what does it include?

From £799 including disbursements (Cremation Fee plus Doctor Fee where applicable) – this selection includes the following:

  • Removal of the body from a venue within 10 miles (extra fees would be paid for out of hours).
  • Removal of the body from a venue within 10 miles (extra fees would be paid for out of hours).
  • Conveying to the crematorium of our choosing in our own car.
  • Coffin suitable for cremation is provided.

Is there a burial alternative?

Sure, there is – our ‘Direct Burial’ is also called the Direct to Graveside’ service. The deceased is taken to a cemetery and buried, without a ceremony, rather than being taken to the crematorium.

How much is the Direct Burial?

Burial option price starts at £1,000 plus disbursements (burial plot and interment fee) – This option comes with the following:

  • Collection within 10 miles (extra hours would be charged).
  • Collection to our Brighton & Hove Cemetery in Hearsette.
  • Suitable coffin for the burial.

What about dressing our loved one or viewings?

For all sides, the notion of immediate cremation or burial is to reduce fuss, avoid issues and, in particular, keeping costs to a minimum.   We find that very few people even like to see the deceased. Maybe 1 in 10 would wish to come to see their loved one.

In this case, for an additional charge, we are in a position to give personal care to your loved one, i.e. washing and dressing the body either in own clothes or in calico cotton sheets (we tend not to embalm or use unnecessarily intrusive treatments unless we are required to do so by legislation or by formal request).

What happens after the cremation?

Returning to the idea of little or no hassle for both sides, and again, in order to keep things to a minimum, including prices, we usually ask clients to collect the ashes from the crematorium on their own. Or, instead, they may choose to have the ashes spread in the remembrance garden in the crematorium.

There is an option to have the ashes delivered to your door for a further cost. There are a variety of options open when it comes to urns. We usually advise clients to look on the internet, given the choice of urns available, and with our own individual tastes, we feel that choosing an urn is a more personal thing to do, and since there is usually no rush to do so, you can do all this in your time from the comfort of your own home.

How do I arrange cremation?

Just call us on phone.

We can usually do it all over the phone, followed by email – we can video conferencing with you and we will consider visiting you personally, in your own house, if necessary. We can’t do this for everybody, but we do so if you’re having trouble getting out and leaving your home. But start by calling us to discuss your requirements.

Testimonials

The comments made by our clients are of great value to us.

We want to share these with you.

“A very dear family friend of ours passed away on the 21st of February in Hove. We went on the website to look for a respectable funeral director in Hove since we reside in the north of England.

We selected Phillip of Sussex Funeral Services. By the time we landed in Hove, all the burial arrangements had been carried out to our satisfaction, and all other help we wanted was catered for to a very high level. You helped us in a very sad day, giving us the time to remember and honour a loved one -you treated our Mum with such respect and dignity”. – K. Sherlock.
