We Provide Direct Cremation & Burial Services

Direct Cremation

Direct cremation not just a simple event, but it can also be private and easy on the finances. That is more affordable for many people. We still maintain the highest of standards, we still ensure that dignity for your loved one is upheld, and that we conduct ourselves in the most respectful manner. The ethos of our company is described as ‘Caring, Compassion and Choice.’

What is Direct Cremation?

Our ‘direct cremation’ option can help those who may need to think about affordability or wish to have a smaller and more private funeral arrangement.

Our sensitive staff will gladly help you throughout, while preserving dignity and discretion. Direct cremation means a simple service which involves gathering your loved one from wherever they died, bringing them back to our premises and keeping them safe until cremation. On that day, we simply transport them, in a fitting coffin, to the crematorium of our choosing, which is typically Woodvale Crematorium. The cremation then takes place on that day, with the remains being cremated and usually ready to collect by the next working day.

Who is a direct cremation suited to?

Such a simple goodbye is appropriate for those who have opted to be cremated without a service, by their own preference and either recorded in a will or dying wishes, or they may have orally expressed it to their loved ones, maybe after, for example, donation of their body organs.

It may be that for financial reasons a direct cremation is better suited, either the person who has died didn’t prepare financially for their own demise or indeed the person left to arrange is not in a position to be able to pay for a traditional service. The deceased person may have had no relatives or friends who have survived them, or be able to attend due to distance and in this case, it seems inappropriate to provide a conventional service when a direct cremation would seem more suitable.

How Much does a Direct Cremation cost and what does it include?

£799 plus expenses (Cremation Charge plus Doctor Payment if applicable) – this choice provides the following:

  • Collection of the body from a location within 10 miles (extra charges will be incurred for out of hours). DURING OFFICE HOURS IS £120
  • Removal of the body from a place within 10 miles (additional fees will be paid for out of hours).
  • Conveying to the crematorium of our choosing in our adapted estate car.
  • Coffin suitable for cremation is provided.

Is there a burial alternative?

Indeed, our “Direct Burial” service is also known as the “Direct to Graveside” service. A similar service but rather than being taken to the crematorium, the deceased is taken to a cemetery and buried, without a service.

How much is the Direct Burial?

Burial choice price begins at £1,000 plus disbursements (burial plot and interment fee) – This option covers the following:

  • 10-mile pick (extra charge will be charged for out of hours).
  • Moving to Brighton & Hove Graveyard in our Hearsette.
  • Suitable coffin for the burial.

What about dressing our loved one or viewings?

The principle of direct cremation or burial is for little to no hassle to all parties, with a view to keeping issues to a minimum and, in particular, to keeping costs to a minimum.   We find that very few people even like to see the deceased. Maybe 1 in 10 would wish to come to see their loved one.

In this case, we can provide personal care of your loved one for an additional fee, i.e. washing and dressing the body either in their own clothes or in calico cotton sheets (we tend not to preserve by embalming or use unnecessarily intrusive therapies unless we are required by law or formal request).

What happens after the cremation?

Going back to the idea of little or no hassle on all sides, and again, with a view to keeping it to a minimum, including expenses, we generally ask clients to collect the ashes directly from the crematorium. Or alternatively they might choose to have the ashes scattered in the garden of remembrance at the crematorium.

There is an opportunity, for a small additional cost, to have the ashes shipped to your house. There are a number of options available when it comes to urns. We typically suggest to clients to search for urns on the Internet as there are usually lots of choices to choose from, and with our own particular tastes, we find that picking an urn is a more personal thing to do, and as there is usually no rush to do so, you can do all this in your time from the comfort of your own home.

How do I arrange cremation?

Simply ring us.

We can usually do it all over the phone, followed by email – we can video conferencing with you and we will consider visiting you personally, in your own house, if necessary. We won’t do this for everybody, so can consider that if you’re having trouble getting out and about your own house. But start by calling us to discuss your requirements.

Testimonials

Our clients’ comments are of much importance to us.

We would like some to share with you.

“A very dear family friend of ours passed away on the 21st of February in Hove. We went on the website to search for a reputable funeral director in Hove as we live in the north of England.

Sussex Funeral Services’ Phillip was our pick. By the time we arrived in Hove, all the arrangements for the funeral had been made to our satisfaction, and any other help we needed was catered for to a very high standard. On a really sad day you supported us, allowing us the chance to recognise and support a loved one, you handled our mother with great reverence and dignity. — K. Sherlock.
