We Provide Direct Cremation & Burial Services

Direct Cremation

Direct cremation is not just a simple ceremony but it can also be private and worry-free financially. It’s more affordable for many people. We still perform to the highest standards; we also guarantee that your loved one’s dignity will be upheld and we are work in the most respectful manner. The ethos of our company is described as ‘Caring, Compassion and Choice.’

What is Direct Cremation?

Our choice of “direct cremation” will help you if you want a more limited, private funeral arrangement or indeed if you worry about affordability.

Our compassionate staff will always support you with dignity and discretion. Direct cremation means a simple service which involves collecting your loved one from wherever they died, bringing them back to our premises and keeping them safe until their cremation day. On the day, in a suitable coffin, we will simply move them to the crematorium of our choosing, usually the Woodvale Crematorium in Brighton. The cremation then takes place on that day with the cremated remains usually being ready for you to collect by the next working day.

Who is a direct cremation suited to?

This simple farewell is appropriate for those who want, of their own choice and either are recorded in a will or dying wishes, to be cremated without a service, or have verbally passed it on to their loved ones, perhaps after donating their body organ for example. It may be that a direct cremation is the most appropriate for financial reasons, either because the person who died did not prepare financially for their own demise or indeed the person left to arrange is not in a position to be able to pay for a traditional service. The deceased person may have had no family or friends who have survived them or be able to attend due to distance, and in that case, it may be unfitting to have a regular service when a direct cremation might seem more appropriate.

How Much Does a Direct Cremation cost and what does it include?

£799 plus expenses (Cremation Charge plus Doctor Payment if applicable) – this choice provides the following:

  • Collection of the body from a location within a 10-mile radius (out of hours will be charged extra).
  • Conveying to crematorium of our choosing in our specialised vehicle.
  • Coffin made suitable for the cremation will be provided.

Is there a burial alternative?

Sure – our Direct Burial’ – also known as a service called Direct to Graveside’ is available. A similar service, but rather than being cremated, the body is taken to the cemetery and buried without a service.

How much is the Direct Burial?

Burial option price starts at £1,000 plus disbursements (burial plot and interment fee) – This option comes with the following:

  • Collection within 10 miles (extra hour costs apply).
  • Moving to Brighton & Hove Graveyard in our Hearsette.
  • Coffin suitable for burial.

What about dressing our loved one or viewings?

The concept of direct cremation or burial was with little to no hassle with all sides, with the intention of keeping things to a minimum and, in particular, of keeping costs to a minimum. We find that very few people even like to see the deceased. Maybe 1 in 10 would wish to come to see their loved one.

In such a case and for an additional cost, we are in a position to give personal care to your loved one, i.e. cleaning and dressing the body either in own clothes or in calico cotton sheets (we do not carry out embalming or use unnecessarily invasive solutions unless we are obligated to do so by legislation or by formal request).

What happens after the cremation?

Returning to the idea of little or no fuss for both sides, and again, to keep things to a minimum, including expenditures, we usually ask clients to collect the ashes from the crematorium themselves. Or alternatively they might choose to have the ashes scattered in the garden of remembrance at the crematorium. There is the choice that the ashes can be shipped to your door at an extra cost. A variety of options are available when it comes to urns.

We usually advise clients to look on the internet, given the choice of urns available, and with our own individual tastes, we feel that choosing an urn is a more personal thing to do, and since there is usually no rush to do so, you can do all this in your time from the comfort of your own home.

How do I arrange cremation?

Simply ring us.

We can normally do it all over the phone, followed up by email – we can video conference with you and if necessary, we could consider visiting you locally, in your own home. We can’t do this for everybody, but we do so if you’re having trouble getting out and leaving your home. But start by calling us to discuss your requirements.

Testimonials

The comments our customers make are of great importance to us.

We would like some to share with you.

“Our very close family member died in Hove on 21 February. As we live in the north of England, we went online to look for a credible funeral director in Hove. We chose Sussex Funeral Services’ Phillip.

By the time we landed in Hove, all the burial arrangements had been carried out to our satisfaction, and all other help we wanted was catered for to a very high level. On a really sad day you supported us, allowing us the chance to recognise and support a loved one, you handled our mother with great reverence and dignity. — K. Sherlock.
