We Provide Direct Cremation & Burial Services

Direct Cremation

Not only is a direct cremation a simple occasion but it can also be private and worry-free in terms of finance. It’s more affordable for many people. We continue to maintain the highest standards, we continue to ensure that dignity is upheld for your loved one, and that we conduct ourselves in the most respectful manner possible. Our company ethos is defined as ‘Caring, Compassion and Choice’

What is Direct Cremation?

The choice of ‘direct cremation’ will benefit those who may be worrying about affordability or want a smaller and more private funeral arrangement.

Throughout this time our we will be there for you to help you, while maintaining dignity and discretion. Direct cremation means a simple service which involves gathering your loved one from wherever they died, bringing them back to our premises and keeping them safe until cremation. On the day, in a suitable coffin, we will simply move them to the crematorium of our choosing, usually the Woodvale Crematorium in Brighton. The cremation then takes place on that day, with the remains being cremated and usually ready to collect by the next working day.

Who is a direct cremation suited to?

Such a simple farewell is suited to those who have opted to be cremated without a service, themselves, through their own choice and either documented in a will or dying wishes, or they may have relayed it verbally to their loved ones, maybe following donation of their body organs for example. For finance purposes, it may be that a direct cremation is best suited, because either the person who died did not plan himself financially or the person left to manage is not capable of paying for a conventional service. It may be that the deceased person didn’t have any family or friends having outlived them, or able to attend due to distance and, in that case, it seems inappropriate to have a traditional service, when a direct cremation might seem more fitting.

How Much Does a Direct Cremation cost and what does it include?

£799 plus expenses (Cremation Charge plus Doctor Payment if applicable) – this choice provides the following:

  • Collection of the body from a location within a 10-mile radius (out of hours will be charged extra).
  • Conveying to the crematorium of our choosing in our adapted estate car.
  • Coffin made suitable for the cremation will be provided.

Is there a burial alternative?

Yes, there is – our ‘Direct Burial’ – also known as a ‘Direct to Graveside’ service. The deceased is taken to a cemetery and buried, without a ceremony, rather than being taken to the crematorium.

How much is the Direct Burial?

Burial option price starts at £1,000 plus disbursements (burial plot and interment fee) – This option comes with the following:

  • Collection within 10 miles (extra hours would be charged).
  • Conveyance to the Brighton & Hove Burial ground in our Hearsette;
  • Coffin suitable for burial.

What about dressing our loved one or viewings?

The concept of direct cremation or burial was with little to no hassle with all sides, with the intention of keeping things to a minimum and, in particular, of keeping costs to a minimum. We notice that very few people even like to view. Possibly only 1 in 10 would like to see their loved one.

In which case – For an extra fee we are able to provide personal care of your loved one, i.e. cleansing and dressing the body either in own clothes or in calico cotton sheeting (we prefer not to embalm or use unnecessary invasive treatments unless we are obliged to do so by law or formal request).

What happens after the cremation?

Returning to the idea of little or no fuss for both sides, and again, to keep things to a minimum, including expenditures, we usually ask clients to collect the ashes from the crematorium themselves. Alternatively, they might choose to scatter ashes in the crematorium remembrance garden. There is an option to have the ashes delivered to your door for a further cost. There are several options available for urns.

We typically suggest to clients to search for urns on the Internet as there are usually lots of choices to choose from, and with our own particular tastes, we find that picking an urn is a more personal thing to do, and as there is usually no rush to do so, you can do all this in your time from the comfort of your own home.

How do I arrange cremation?

Simply ring us.

Usually, we would do that all over the phone, followed by email – we can also do a video conference with you, and if necessary, we might discuss meeting you personally, in your own house. We won’t do this for everybody, so can consider that if you’re having trouble getting out and about your own house. But you can call us first let’s talk about your requirements.

Testimonials

The comments made by our clients are of great value to us.

We’d like to share a few with you.

“A very dear family friend of ours passed away on the 21st of February in Hove. We went on the website to look for a respectable funeral director in Hove since we reside in the north of England. We chose Phillip of Sussex Funeral Services.

By the time we arrived in Hove, all the arrangements for the funeral had been made to our satisfaction, and any other help we needed was catered for to a very high standard. You helped us in a very sad day, giving us the time to remember and honour a loved one -you treated our Mum with such respect and dignity”. – K. Sherlock.
