In Shortgate, Sussex Funeral Services can help you with necessary funeral arrangements when it comes to the loss of a loved one. We have a range of choices, ranging from our traditional funerals to the easiest, ‘no frills’ choices that will hopefully be right for you.
Our ‘No Fuss’ funerals and ‘Direct Cremation’ or burial’ options are radically different from the conventional funeral method. These simple alternatives give you the option of having a memorial or special ceremony at a later time.
Not only is direct cremation simple, but it is also be private and financially beneficial. This is more affordable for many people. We continue to maintain the highest standards, we continue to ensure that dignity is upheld for your loved one, and that we conduct ourselves in the most respectful manner possible. Our company ethos is described as Caring, Compassion and Choice’
Our ‘direct cremation’ option can help those who may need to think about affordability or wish to have a smaller and more private funeral arrangement.
Our sensitive staff will gladly support you, while upholding dignity and discretion, throughout. Direct cremation means that we will pick up your beloved from wherever they died and get them back to our premises to keep them safe until the day they are cremated. On that day, we simply move them to the crematorium of our choosing, normally Woodvale Crematorium, in Brighton, in a suitable coffin. The cremation then happens on that day, and the cremation remains usually ready for collection on the next working day.
Such a simple goodbye is appropriate for those who have opted to be cremated without a service, by their own preference and either recorded in a will or dying wishes, or they may have orally expressed it to their loved ones, maybe after, for example, donation of their body organs. It may be that a direct cremation is best suited for financial purposes, either the person who died did not prepare financially for their own death or perhaps the person left to manage is not in a position to be able to pay for a conventional service. The deceased person may have had no family or friends who have survived them or be able to attend due to distance, and in that case, it may be unfitting to have a regular service when a direct cremation might seem more appropriate.
From £799, plus disbursements (cremation fee, plus Doctor Fee if applicable) – this option includes the following:
Yes, our ‘Direct Burial’ is also regarded to as the ‘Direct to Graveside’ service. A similar service, the dead is taken to a graveyard and buried, without a service, rather than being taken to the crematorium.
Burial option from Price £1,000 plus disbursements (burial plot and interment fee) – This option includes the following:
For all parties, the idea of immediate cremation or burial was for little to No Fuss, with a view to reducing issues and in particular bringing costs down to a minimum. We find that very few people actually want to go through any viewing of the deceased. Maybe 1 in 10 might wish to come and see their loved one.
In that situation, we can provide personal care for your loved one for an extra fee, i.e. washing and dressing the body either in their own clothing or in sheets of calico cotton (we tend not to embalm or use unnecessarily intrusive procedures unless we are requested to do so by law or formal request).
Going back to the concept of little or no fuss on all sides, and again, with a view to keeping things to a minimum, including costs, we normally ask clients to collect the ashes directly from the crematorium. Alternatively, they might choose to scatter ashes in the crematorium remembrance garden. There is an option to have the ashes delivered to your door for a further cost. There is a variety of options open when it comes to urns.
We normally encourage clients to search on the internet, considering the range of available urns, and with our own particular preferences, we feel that picking an urn is a more personal thing to do, and as there is generally no rush to do so, you can do all this at your convenient time, from the comfort of your own home.
Just call us.
We can normally do it all over the phone, followed up by email – we can video conference with you and if necessary, we could consider visiting you locally, in your own home. We can’t do this for everyone but if you have trouble leaving your house, we can consider coming over. But you can get started by calling to talk about your requirements.

We want to share these with you.
“A very dear family friend of ours passed away on the 21st of February in Hove. We went on the website to look for a respectable funeral director in Hove since we reside in the north of England. We selected Phillip of Sussex Funeral Services.
By the time we arrived in Hove, all the funeral arrangements had been made to our satisfaction, and any other assistance that we needed was catered to a very high standard. On a really sad day you supported us, allowing us the chance to recognise and support a loved one, you handled our mother with great reverence and dignity. — K. Sherlock.
