In Shoreham-By-Sea, Sussex Funeral Services will assist you in making the appropriate funeral arrangements for your loved one’s death. We have a wide range of choices from the more straightforward ‘no hassle’ choices to our conventional funeral services. We aim to fulfill your needs.

Our ‘No-Fuss’ funerals and ‘Direct cremation’ or Burial’ options differ significantly from the regular funeral option. These easy alternatives give you the chance to have a remembrance or special ceremony at a future date.

We Provide Direct Cremation & Burial Services

Direct Cremation

Not only is a direct cremation a simple occasion but it can also be private and worry-free in terms of finance. It’s more affordable for many people. We also uphold the highest standards; we continue to safeguard the dignity of your loved and that we conduct ourselves in the most respectful manner. Our company’s philosophy is as ‘Caring, Compassion and Choice’

What is Direct Cremation?

Our ‘direct cremation’ option will be more favourable to those who worry about affordability or wish to have a smaller and more private funeral arrangement.

Our sensitive staff will gladly support you, while upholding dignity and discretion, throughout. Direct cremation means a simple service which involves collecting your loved one from wherever they died, bringing them back to our premises and keeping them safe until their cremation day. On that day we simply convey them, in a suitable coffin, to the crematorium, of our choice, which is usually Woodvale Crematorium, in Brighton. The cremation then takes place on that day, with the remains being cremated and usually ready to collect by the next working day.

Who is a direct cremation suited to?

Such a simple goodbye is appropriate for those who have opted to be cremated without a service, by their own preference and either recorded in a will or dying wishes, or they may have orally expressed it to their loved ones, maybe after, for example, donation of their body organs. It may be that for financial reasons a direct cremation is better suited, either the person who has died didn’t prepare financially for their own demise or indeed the person left to arrange is not in a position to be able to pay for a traditional service. The deceased person may have had no relatives or friends who have survived them, or be able to attend due to distance and in this case, it seems inappropriate to provide a conventional service when a direct cremation would seem more suitable.

How Much Does a Direct Cremation cost and what does it include?

From £799, plus disbursements (cremation fee, plus Doctor Fee if applicable) – this option includes the following:

  • Collection of the body from a location within a 10-mile radius (out of hours will be charged extra).
  • Conveying to a crematorium of our preference in our suitable vehicle.
  • Coffin suitable for cremation is provided.

Is there a burial alternative?

Yes, there is – our ‘Direct Burial’ – also known as a ‘Direct to Graveside’ service. The deceased is taken to a cemetery and buried, without a ceremony, rather than being taken to the crematorium.

How much is the Direct Burial?

Burial choice price begins at £1,000 plus disbursements (burial plot and interment fee) – This option covers the following:

  • Collection within 10 miles (extra hours would be charged).
  • Moving to Brighton & Hove Graveyard in our Hearsette.
  • A coffin for burial.

What about dressing our loved one or viewings?

The principle of direct cremation or burial is for little to no hassle to all parties, with a view to keeping issues to a minimum and, in particular, to keeping costs to a minimum. We notice that very few people even like to view. Possibly only 1 in 10 would like to see their loved one.

In such a case and for an additional cost, we are in a position to give personal care to your loved one, i.e. cleaning and dressing the body either in own clothes or in calico cotton sheets (we do not carry out embalming or use unnecessarily invasive solutions unless we are obligated to do so by legislation or by formal request).

What happens after the cremation?

Going back to the idea of little or no hassle on all sides, and again, with a view to keeping it to a minimum, including expenses, we generally ask clients to collect the ashes directly from the crematorium. Alternatively, they might choose to scatter ashes in the crematorium remembrance garden. There is an opportunity, for a small additional cost, to have the ashes shipped to your house. When it comes to urns, there are many options available.

We generally tell clients to look on the internet for urns given the wide range of choices available, and we feel that choosing an urn is a more personal thing to do, based on individual tastes, and since there is usually no rush to do so, you can do all of this from the comfort of your own home in your time.

How do I arrange cremation?

Simply give us a call.

We can normally do it all over the phone, followed up by email – we can video conference with you and if necessary, we could consider visiting you locally, in your own home. We can’t do this for everybody, but we do so if you’re having trouble getting out and leaving your home. But you can get started by calling to talk about your requirements.

Our transparency and integrity

Our caring and ethical method of planning a funeral or cremation is personally maintained by our funeral director, Philip, and his Wife Sallie, both of whom aim to provide you with a package that suits your needs completely. Sussex Funeral Services are very proud to offer transparent pricing to uphold our ethical and moral codes of conduct. It is our belief that this transparency is incredibly necessary, providing a distinct alternative to any of the other funeral firms. Sussex Funeral Services are one of the few Brighton Funeral Directors who want you to be aware of all our funeral service options in the name of decency and clarity. Our direct burial and cremation funeral options are easy and dignified, providing you and your family a more affordable option.

Knowing how huge the upset of losing a loved one can be, we are dedicated to giving you the most fitting funeral for your case. Our team are seasoned, compassionate and know how tough it can be for a family or person to plan a funeral. Our emphasis is based on fairness and integrity, and those who undergo loss are all too often ignorant of the inexpensive and dignified direct funeral services that exist to help alleviate the monetary consequences during this painful and emotionally stressful period.

  • Sussex Funeral Services also can provide a completely personalised burial or cremation service.
  • Provide help and assistances every step of the way.
  • Fully experienced, compassionate team.

Testimonials

The reviews from our customers are of great importance to us.

We’d like to share some with you.

“Our very close family member died in Hove on 21 February. We went on the website to look for a respectable funeral director in Hove since we reside in the north of England. We chose Sussex Funeral Services’ Phillip.

By the time we arrived in Hove, all the preparations for the burial had been done to our satisfaction, and all other support we wanted was of a very high quality. You helped us in a very sad day, giving us the time to remember and honour a loved one -you treated our Mum with such respect and dignity”. – K. Sherlock.

Phil from Sussex Funeral Services was absolutely fantastic in organising my Dad's funeral. He's done quite a few Hindu funerals before so knew exactly what we needed and organised everything on the short time we needed it done. Extremely professional and friendly.

I cannot recommend Sussex Funeral Services more highly. They handled all of our requests with great sensitivity and professionalism. Everything was explained clearly and in sufficient detail. Different service/cost options were discussed, and at no point did we feel unnecessarily overcharged. Nothing was too much trouble, they are lovely people and gave us really wonderful service.

Truly an amazing funeral directors. Helped us bury my dad when it was so difficult for us. Coming from a culturally diverse background, it was nice to have people who worked around us to ensure my dad had the best, rather than have us to confirm to the service. Service is what we experienced from other funeral directors, therefore we moved to Sussex Funeral Services. I highly recommend Sussex Funeral Services for a personalised service which is people focus and they will help work within your budget.

Philip,I just wanted to thank you formally for all your help in designing and delivering Joyce's funeral. I didn't really know how to go about choosing a funeral director, and I'm so glad I chose you. You gave extremely good advice about the design of the service. Throughout the process you have been very helpful and gave me a lot of reassurance through your obvious good planning, professionalism and expertise. And you provided me with great people to work with - Lisa with the flowers and, in particular, the wonderful Jen.I'm sure you know that this has been the most difficult time of my life. I'm very pleased with the way that the funeral went - as were all the people there. So you have my gratitude for making it a success and for the fact that the process was more pain free than I would have dared to imagine.Warm regards,Ed Hagger
