In Rye-Harbour, Sussex Funeral Services can help you with necessary funeral arrangements when it comes to the loss of a loved one. We have a variety of options from our traditional funerals to the simplest, ‘no fuss’ options that will hopefully fit your needs.

Our ‘No-Fuss’ option and ‘Direct Cremation’ or Burial are totally different from the conventional funeral method. These simple alternatives give you the option of having a memorial or special ceremony at a later time.

We Provide Direct Cremation & Burial Services

Direct Cremation

Not only is direct cremation simple, but it is also be private and financially beneficial. For many people it is more affordable. We also uphold the highest standards; we continue to safeguard the dignity of your loved and that we conduct ourselves in the most respectful manner. Our company ethos is defined as ‘Caring, Compassion and Choice’

What is Direct Cremation?

Our ‘direct cremation’ option can help those who may need to think about affordability or want a smaller and more private arrangement for funeral.

Our sensitive staff will gladly help you throughout, while preserving dignity and discretion. Direct cremation means that we will pick up your beloved from wherever they died and get them back to our premises to keep them safe until the day they are cremated. On that day we simply convey them, in a suitable coffin, to the crematorium, of our choice, which is usually Woodvale Crematorium, in Brighton. The cremation then takes place on that day with the cremated remains usually being ready for you to collect by the next working day.

Who is a direct cremation suited to?

Such a modest departure is appropriate to those who have elected to be cremated without service, by their own choice and either recorded in will or dying wishes, or who may have communicated it orally to their loved ones, perhaps after the donation of their body organs. This may be that, for financial reasons, direct cremation is the best option, because the person who died did not prepare financially for his own death or, perhaps, the person left to manage is not in a position to be able to pay for the regular service. It may be that the deceased person didn’t have any family or friends having outlived them, or able to attend due to distance and, in that case, it seems inappropriate to have a traditional service, when a direct cremation might seem more fitting.

How Much Does a Direct Cremation cost and what does it include?

From £799, in addition to disbursements (Cremation cost plus Doctor’s cost where appropriate) – this choice includes the following:

  • Collection of the body from a location within a 10-mile radius (out of hours will be charged extra).
  • Conveying to the crematorium of our choosing in our adapted estate car.
  • Coffin ideal for cremation will be made available.

Is there a burial alternative?

Sure – our Direct Burial’ – also known as a service called Direct to Graveside’ is available. The deceased is taken to a cemetery and buried, without a ceremony, rather than being taken to the crematorium.

How much is the Direct Burial?

Burial option starting from Price £1,000 in addition to disbursements (burial plot and interment fee) – this service involves the following:

  • Collection within 10 miles (extra hour costs apply).
  • Collection to the Brighton & Hove Cemetery in Hearsette.
  • A coffin that is appropriate for burial.

What about dressing our loved one or viewings?

For all parties, the idea of immediate cremation or burial was for little to No Fuss, with a view to reducing issues and in particular bringing costs down to a minimum. We discover that very few people really want to view. Perhaps 1 in 10 would like to come to view their loved one.

In that situation, we can provide personal care for your loved one for an extra fee, i.e. washing and dressing the body either in their own clothing or in sheets of calico cotton (we tend not to embalm or use unnecessarily intrusive procedures unless we are requested to do so by law or formal request).

What happens after the cremation?

Going back to the idea of little or no hassle on all sides, and again, with a view to keeping it to a minimum, including expenses, we generally ask clients to collect the ashes directly from the crematorium. Alternatively, they might choose to scatter ashes in the crematorium remembrance garden. There is an option to have the ashes delivered to your door for a further cost. There are a number of options available when it comes to urns.

We usually advise clients to look on the internet, given the choice of available urns, and we feel that picking an urn is a more personal thing to do, given individual tastes, and since there is generally no rush to do so, you can do all this at your own convenience from the comfort of your home.

How do I arrange cremation?

Just call us on the phone.

We can normally do it all over the phone, followed up by email – we can video conference with you and if necessary, we could consider visiting you locally, in your own home. We won’t do this for everybody, so can consider that if you’re having trouble getting out and about your own house. But you can call us on the phone to talk about your requirements first.

Testimonials

Comments from our clients are of tremendous value to us.

We’d like to share some with you.

“Our very close family member died in Hove on 21 February. As we live in the north of England, we went on the website to search for a reputable funeral director in Hove. We chose Phillip of Sussex Funeral Services.

By the time we landed in Hove, all the burial arrangements had been carried out to our satisfaction, and all other help we wanted was catered for to a very high level. On a really sad day, you assisted us, allowing us time to consider and remember a loved one, you handled our mother with great reverence and integrity. – K. Sherlock.
