In Maplehurst, Sussex Funeral Services can help you with necessary funeral arrangements when it comes to the loss of a loved one. We have a range of choices, ranging from our traditional funerals to the easiest, ‘no frills’ choices that will hopefully be right for you.
Our ‘No Fuss’ funerals and ‘Direct Cremation’ or burial’ options are radically different from the conventional funeral method. These simple alternatives give you the option of having a memorial or special ceremony at a later time.
Not only is direct cremation simple, but it is also be private and financially beneficial. For many people it is more affordable. We still maintain the highest of standards, we still ensure that dignity for your loved one is upheld, and that we conduct ourselves in the most respectful manner. Our company philosophy is defined as ‘Caring, Compassion and Choice’
Our ‘direct cremation’ option will be more favourable to those who worry about affordability or wish to have a smaller and more private funeral arrangement.
Throughout this time our we will be there for you to help you, while maintaining dignity and discretion. Direct cremation means a simple service that includes us taking your loved one from wherever they died, bringing them back to our premises and keeping them safe until the day they are cremated. On that day, we simply transfer them to the crematorium of our choice, usually Woodvale Crematorium, in Brighton, in a suitable coffin. The cremation then happens on that day, and the cremation remains usually ready for collection on the next working day.
Such a modest departure is appropriate to those who have elected to be cremated without service, by their own choice and either recorded in will or dying wishes, or who may have communicated it orally to their loved ones, perhaps after the donation of their body organs. It may be that for financial reasons a direct cremation is better suited, either the person who has died didn’t prepare financially for their own demise or indeed the person left to arrange is not in a position to be able to pay for a traditional service. The deceased person may have had no relatives or friends who have survived them, or be able to attend due to distance and in this case, it seems inappropriate to provide a conventional service when a direct cremation would seem more suitable.
£799 plus expenses (Cremation Charge plus Doctor Payment if applicable) – this choice provides the following:
Sure – our Direct Burial’ – also known as a service called Direct to Graveside’ is available. A similar service, but instead of being taken to the crematorium, the body is taken to the graveyard and buried without a service.
Burial option from Price £1,000 plus disbursements (burial plot and interment fee) – This option includes the following:
For all sides, the notion of immediate cremation or burial is to reduce fuss, avoid issues and, in particular, keeping costs to a minimum. We found out that not many people would really want to view the deceased. Maybe 1 in 10 may wish to come and see their loved one.
In this case, we can provide personal care of your loved one for an additional fee, i.e. washing and dressing the body either in their own clothes or in calico cotton sheets (we tend not to preserve by embalming or use unnecessarily intrusive therapies unless we are required by law or formal request).
Returning to the idea of little or no hassle for both sides, and again, in order to keep things to a minimum, including prices, we usually ask clients to collect the ashes from the crematorium on their own. Or, instead, they may opt to scatter the ashes in the memorial garden at the crematorium. There is a chance that the ashes will be shipped to your door at a further cost. There are a number of options available when it comes to urns.
We typically suggest to clients to search for urns on the Internet as there are usually lots of choices to choose from, and with our own particular tastes, we find that picking an urn is a more personal thing to do, and as there is usually no rush to do so, you can do all this in your time from the comfort of your own home.
Simply give us a call.
We would usually do it all over the phone, followed by email – we can also do a video conferencing with you and, if required, we will consider visiting you at home. We can’t do this for everyone but if you have trouble leaving your house, we can consider coming over. But you can call us first let’s talk about your requirements.

We’d like to share them with you.
“Our good family friend passed away in Hove on 21 February. We went on the website to search for a reputable funeral director in Hove as we live in the north of England. We selected Phillip of Sussex Funeral Services.
By the time we arrived in Hove, all the preparations for the burial had been done to our satisfaction, and all other support we wanted was of a very high quality. On a very sad day you helped us, giving us time to remember and honour a loved one, you treated our mother with such esteem and respect. – K. Sherlock.
