We Provide Direct Cremation & Burial Services

Direct Cremation

Not only is direct cremation simple, but it is also be private and financially beneficial. It’s more affordable to a lot of people. We continue to maintain the highest standards, we continue to ensure that dignity is upheld for your loved one, and that we conduct ourselves in the most respectful manner possible. Our company ethos is described as Caring, Compassion and Choice’

What is Direct Cremation?

Our ‘direct cremation’ option will be more favourable to those who worry about affordability or wish to have a smaller and more private funeral arrangement.

Our sensitive staff will gladly help you throughout, while preserving dignity and discretion. Direct cremation means a simple service that includes us taking your loved one from wherever they died, bringing them back to our premises and keeping them safe until the day they are cremated. On that day, we simply move them to the crematorium of our choosing, normally Woodvale Crematorium, in Brighton, in a suitable coffin. The cremation then takes place on that day, with the remains being cremated and usually ready to collect by the next working day.

Who is a direct cremation suited to?

Such a modest departure is appropriate to those who have elected to be cremated without service, by their own choice and either recorded in will or dying wishes, or who may have communicated it orally to their loved ones, perhaps after the donation of their body organs. It may be that for financial reasons a direct cremation is better suited, either the person who has died didn’t prepare financially for their own demise or indeed the person left to arrange is not in a position to be able to pay for a traditional service. It may be that the deceased person didn’t have any family or friends having outlived them, or able to attend due to distance and, in that case, it seems inappropriate to have a traditional service, when a direct cremation might seem more fitting.

How Much Does a Direct Cremation cost and what does it include?

£799 plus expenses (Cremation Charge plus Doctor Payment if applicable) – this choice provides the following:

  • Removal of the body from a venue within 10 miles (extra fees would be paid for out of hours).
  • Conveying in our chosen car to the crematorium of our choice.
  • Coffin made suitable for the cremation will be provided.

Is there a burial alternative?

Yes, there is – our ‘Direct Burial’ – also known as a ‘Direct to Graveside’ service. A similar service but rather than being taken to the crematorium, the deceased is taken to a cemetery and buried, without a service.

How much is the Direct Burial?

Burial selection starts from Price £1,000 including disbursements (burial plot and interment fee) – This option comes with the following:

  • Collection within 10 miles (out of hours will incur an extra charge).
  • Conveyance to the Brighton & Hove Burial ground in our Hearsette;
  • Suitable coffin for the burial.

What about dressing our loved one or viewings?

For all sides, the notion of immediate cremation or burial is to reduce fuss, avoid issues and, in particular, keeping costs to a minimum. We find that very few people even like to see the deceased. Maybe 1 in 10 would wish to come to see their loved one.

In this case, we can provide personal care of your loved one for an additional fee, i.e. washing and dressing the body either in their own clothes or in calico cotton sheets (we tend not to preserve by embalming or use unnecessarily intrusive therapies unless we are required by law or formal request).

What happens after the cremation?

Going back to the idea of little or no hassle on all sides, and again, with a view to keeping it to a minimum, including expenses, we generally ask clients to collect the ashes directly from the crematorium. Alternatively, they might choose to scatter ashes in the crematorium remembrance garden. There is an option to have the ashes delivered to your door for a further cost. There are several options available for urns.

We generally tell clients to look on the internet for urns given the wide range of choices available, and we feel that choosing an urn is a more personal thing to do, based on individual tastes, and since there is usually no rush to do so, you can do all of this from the comfort of your own home in your time.

How do I arrange cremation?

Simply ring us.

We can normally do it all over the phone, followed up by email – we can video conference with you and if necessary, we could consider visiting you locally, in your own home. We can’t do this for everybody, but we do so if you’re having trouble getting out and leaving your home. But start by calling us to discuss your requirements.

Testimonials

The comments our customers make are of great importance to us.

We’d like to share a few with you.

“A very dear family friend of ours passed away on the 21st of February in Hove. We went to the website to find a respectable funeral director in Hove, as we reside in the north of England. We selected Phillip of Sussex Funeral Services.

By the time we arrived in Hove, all the arrangements for the funeral had been made to our satisfaction, and any other help we needed was catered for to a very high standard. On a really sad day you supported us, allowing us the chance to recognise and support a loved one, you handled our mother with great reverence and dignity. — K. Sherlock.
