In Highleigh, Sussex Funeral Services will assist you with the funeral plans following the death of a loved one. We have a wide range of choices from the more straightforward ‘no hassle’ choices to our conventional funeral services. We aim to fulfill your needs.
Our ‘No-Fuss’ option and ‘Direct Cremation’ or Burial are totally different from the conventional funeral method. These simple options allow you to hold a memorial or special ceremony later on.
Not only is direct cremation a simple opportunity but it is also private and worry-free. It’s more affordable for many people. We take our high standards very seriously; we also guarantee that your beloved’s dignity is upheld and we carry ourselves in the most respectful way. The ethos of our company is described as ‘Caring, Compassion and Choice.’
The choice of ‘direct cremation’ will benefit those who may be worrying about affordability or want a smaller and more private funeral arrangement.
Throughout this time our we will be there for you to help you, while maintaining dignity and discretion. Direct cremation means that we will pick up your beloved from wherever they died and get them back to our premises to keep them safe until the day they are cremated. On that day we simply convey them, in a suitable coffin, to the crematorium, of our choice, which is usually Woodvale Crematorium, in Brighton. The cremation then takes place on that day with the cremated remains usually being ready for you to collect by the next working day.
Such a humble send-off is suitable for those who have chosen to be cremated without a service, through their own choice and either documented in a will or dying wishes, or they may have verbally relayed it to their loved ones, perhaps following, for example, donation of their body organs. It may be that a direct cremation is best suited for financial purposes, either the person who died did not prepare financially for their own death or perhaps the person left to manage is not in a position to be able to pay for a conventional service. It may be that the deceased person did not have any relatives or friends who outlived them , or be able to attend due to distance in this case, it will be inappropriate to provide a conventional service when direct cremation would seem more fitting.
Costs are from £799, plus disbursements which includes cremation fee plus Doctor’s fee where applicable – this option comes with the following:
Indeed, our “Direct Burial” service is also known as the “Direct to Graveside” service. The deceased is taken to a cemetery and buried, without a ceremony, rather than being taken to the crematorium.
Burial selection starts from Price £1,000 including disbursements (burial plot and interment fee) – This option comes with the following:
The idea of the direct cremation or burial was for little or No Fuss for both parties, with a view to keeping things to a minimum and in particular to keep costs to a minimum. We discover that very few people really want to view. Perhaps 1 in 10 would like to come to view their loved one.
In this case, for an additional charge, we are in a position to give personal care to your loved one, i.e. washing and dressing the body either in own clothes or in calico cotton sheets (we tend not to embalm or use unnecessarily intrusive treatments unless we are required to do so by legislation or by formal request).
Going back to the concept of little or no fuss on all sides, and again, with a view to keeping things to a minimum, including costs, we normally ask clients to collect the ashes directly from the crematorium. Or alternatively they might choose to have the ashes scattered in the garden of remembrance at the crematorium. The ashes can be delivered to your door for an extra fee. A variety of options are available when it comes to urns.
We typically suggest to clients to search for urns on the Internet as there are usually lots of choices to choose from, and with our own particular tastes, we find that picking an urn is a more personal thing to do, and as there is usually no rush to do so, you can do all this in your time from the comfort of your own home.
Just call us.
We would usually do it all over the phone, followed by email – we can also do a video conferencing with you and, if required, we will consider visiting you at home. We won’t do this for everybody, so can consider that if you’re having trouble getting out and about your own house. But you can call us on the phone to talk about your requirements first.

We want to share these with you.
“Our dear family friend died in Hove on the 21st of February. As we live in the north of England, we went online to look for a credible funeral director in Hove. Sussex Funeral Services’ Phillip was our pick.
By the time we arrived in Hove, all the preparations for the burial had been done to our satisfaction, and all other support we wanted was of a very high quality. On a really sad day, you assisted us, allowing us time to consider and remember a loved one, you handled our mother with great reverence and integrity. – K. Sherlock.
