We Provide Direct Cremation & Burial Services

Direct Cremation

Direct cremation is not just a simple ceremony but it can also be private and worry-free financially. For many people it is more affordable. We also uphold the highest standards; we continue to safeguard the dignity of your loved and that we conduct ourselves in the most respectful manner. Our company philosophy is defined as ‘Caring, Compassion and Choice’

What is Direct Cremation?

The choice of ‘direct cremation’ will benefit those who may be worrying about affordability or want a smaller and more private funeral arrangement.

Our compassionate staff will always support you with dignity and discretion. Direct cremation means a simple service which involves gathering your loved one from wherever they died, bringing them back to our premises and keeping them safe until cremation. On that day, we simply transport them, in a fitting coffin, to the crematorium of our choosing, which is typically Woodvale Crematorium. The cremation then takes place on that day with the cremated remains usually being ready for you to collect by the next working day.

Who is a direct cremation suited to?

Such a simple farewell is suited to those who have opted to be cremated without a service, themselves, through their own choice and either documented in a will or dying wishes, or they may have relayed it verbally to their loved ones, maybe following donation of their body organs for example. It may be that for financial reasons a direct cremation is better suited, either the person who has died didn’t prepare financially for their own demise or indeed the person left to arrange is not in a position to be able to pay for a traditional service. It could be that the deceased had no relatives or friends who had survived them or be able to attend due to distance and, in this situation, a conventional service may be unsuitable if a direct cremation would seem more suitable.

How Much Does a Direct Cremation cost and what does it include?

Costs are from £799, plus disbursements which includes cremation fee plus Doctor’s fee where applicable – this option comes with the following:

  • Collection of the body from a location within 10 miles (extra charges will be incurred for out of hours).
  • Conveying in our chosen car to the crematorium of our choice.
  • Coffin made suitable for the cremation will be provided.

Is there a burial alternative?

Sure, there is – our ‘Direct Burial’ is also called the Direct to Graveside’ service. The deceased is taken to a cemetery and buried, without a ceremony, rather than being taken to the crematorium.

How much is the Direct Burial?

Burial selection starts from Price £1,000 including disbursements (burial plot and interment fee) – This option comes with the following:

  • Collection within 10 miles (extra hour charges apply).
  • Collection to the Brighton & Hove Cemetery in Hearsette.
  • Coffin suitable for burial.

What about dressing our loved one or viewings?

The principle of direct cremation or burial is for little to no hassle to all parties, with a view to keeping issues to a minimum and, in particular, to keeping costs to a minimum. We find that very few people even like to see the deceased. Maybe 1 in 10 would wish to come to see their loved one.

In which case – For an extra fee we are able to provide personal care of your loved one, i.e. cleansing and dressing the body either in own clothes or in calico cotton sheeting (we prefer not to embalm or use unnecessary invasive treatments unless we are obliged to do so by law or formal request).

What happens after the cremation?

Going back to the concept of little or no fuss on all sides, and again, with a view to keeping things to a minimum, including costs, we normally ask clients to collect the ashes directly from the crematorium. Or alternatively they might choose to have the ashes scattered in the garden of remembrance at the crematorium. There is an option to have the ashes delivered to your door for a further cost. There are a number of options available when it comes to urns.

We usually advise clients to look on the internet, given the choice of urns available, and with our own individual tastes, we feel that choosing an urn is a more personal thing to do, and since there is usually no rush to do so, you can do all this in your time from the comfort of your own home.

How do I arrange cremation?

Just give us a call.

We would usually do it all over the phone, followed by email – we can also do a video conferencing with you and, if required, we will consider visiting you at home. We can’t do this for everyone but we can consider it if you have difficulties getting out and about your own home. But start by calling us to discuss your requirements.

Testimonials

The comments our customers make are of great importance to us.

We would like some to share with you.

“Our good family friend passed away in Hove on 21 February. As we live in the north of England, we went on the website to search for a reputable funeral director in Hove. Sussex Funeral Services’ Phillip was our pick.

By the time we arrived in Hove, all the funeral arrangements had been made to our satisfaction, and any other assistance that we needed was catered to a very high standard. On a very sad day you helped us, giving us time to remember and honour a loved one, you treated our mother with such esteem and respect. – K. Sherlock.
