We Provide Direct Cremation & Burial Services

Direct Cremation

Not only is a direct cremation a simple occasion but it can also be private and worry-free in terms of finance. It’s more affordable for many people. We take our high standards very seriously; we also guarantee that your beloved’s dignity is upheld and we carry ourselves in the most respectful way. Our company ethos is described as Caring, Compassion and Choice’

What is Direct Cremation?

Our ‘direct cremation’ option can help those who may need to think about affordability or want a smaller and more private arrangement for funeral.

Throughout , our sensitive staff will support you while upholding dignity and discretion. Direct cremation means a simple service which involves gathering your loved one from wherever they died, bringing them back to our premises and keeping them safe until cremation. On that day we simply convey them, in a suitable coffin, to the crematorium, of our choice, which is usually Woodvale Crematorium, in Brighton. The cremation then takes place on that day with the cremated remains usually being ready for you to collect by the next working day.

Who is a direct cremation suited to?

Such a simple farewell is suited to those who have opted to be cremated without a service, themselves, through their own choice and either documented in a will or dying wishes, or they may have relayed it verbally to their loved ones, maybe following donation of their body organs for example. This may be that, for financial reasons, direct cremation is the best option, because the person who died did not prepare financially for his own death or, perhaps, the person left to manage is not in a position to be able to pay for the regular service. It could be that the deceased had no relatives or friends who had survived them or be able to attend due to distance and, in this situation, a conventional service may be unsuitable if a direct cremation would seem more suitable.

How Much Does a Direct Cremation cost and what does it include?

£799 plus expenses (Cremation Charge plus Doctor Payment if applicable) – this choice provides the following:

  • Removal of the body from a place within 10 miles (additional fees will be paid for out of hours).
  • Conveying to crematorium of our choosing in our specialised vehicle.
  • Coffin made suitable for the cremation will be provided.

Is there a burial alternative?

Yes, there is – our ‘Direct Burial’ – also known as a ‘Direct to Graveside’ service. The deceased is taken to a cemetery and buried, without a ceremony, rather than being taken to the crematorium.

How much is the Direct Burial?

Burial option price starts at £1,000 plus disbursements (burial plot and interment fee) – This option comes with the following:

  • 10-mile pick (extra charge will be charged for out of hours).
  • Collection to our Brighton & Hove Cemetery in Hearsette.
  • A coffin that is appropriate for burial.

What about dressing our loved one or viewings?

The principle of direct cremation or burial is for little to no hassle to all parties, with a view to keeping issues to a minimum and, in particular, to keeping costs to a minimum. We notice that very few people even like to view. Possibly only 1 in 10 would like to see their loved one.

In this case, we can provide personal care of your loved one for an additional fee, i.e. washing and dressing the body either in their own clothes or in calico cotton sheets (we tend not to preserve by embalming or use unnecessarily intrusive therapies unless we are required by law or formal request).

What happens after the cremation?

Returning to the idea of little or no hassle for both sides, and again, in order to keep things to a minimum, including prices, we usually ask clients to collect the ashes from the crematorium on their own. Alternatively, they might choose to scatter ashes in the crematorium remembrance garden. There is an option to have the ashes delivered to your door for a further cost. There are a number of options available when it comes to urns.

We usually advise clients to look on the internet, given the choice of available urns, and we feel that picking an urn is a more personal thing to do, given individual tastes, and since there is generally no rush to do so, you can do all this at your own convenience from the comfort of your home.

How do I arrange cremation?

Just call us on the phone.

We can usually do it all over the phone, followed by email – we can video conference with you and we will consider visiting you personally, in your own house, if necessary. We can’t do this for everyone but we can consider it if you have difficulties getting out and about your own home. But you can get started by calling to talk about your requirements.

Testimonials

The reviews from our customers are of great importance to us.

We’d like to share a few with you.

“Our dear family friend died in Hove on the 21st of February. We went to the website to find a respectable funeral director in Hove, as we reside in the north of England. Sussex Funeral Services’ Phillip was our pick.

By the time we landed in Hove, all the burial arrangements had been carried out to our satisfaction, and all other help we wanted was catered for to a very high level. On a very sad day you helped us, giving us time to remember and honour a loved one, you treated our mother with such esteem and respect. – K. Sherlock.
