We Provide Direct Cremation & Burial Services

Direct Cremation

Not only is direct cremation simple, but it is also be private and financially beneficial. That is more affordable for many people. We continue to maintain the highest standards, we continue to ensure that dignity is upheld for your loved one, and that we conduct ourselves in the most respectful manner possible. The ethos of our company is described as ‘Caring, Compassion and Choice.’

What is Direct Cremation?

Our choice of “direct cremation” will help you if you want a more limited, private funeral arrangement or indeed if you worry about affordability.

Our compassionate staff will always support you with dignity and discretion. The direct cremation means a simple service that involves us collecting your loved one from wherever they died, bringing back to our premises and keeping them safe until the day of their cremation. On that day, we simply transfer them to the crematorium of our choice, usually Woodvale Crematorium, in Brighton, in a suitable coffin. The cremation takes place on that day and the cremated remains are usually available to be collected on the next working day.

Who is a direct cremation suited to?

Such a modest departure is appropriate to those who have elected to be cremated without service, by their own choice and either recorded in will or dying wishes, or who may have communicated it orally to their loved ones, perhaps after the donation of their body organs. It may be that for financial reasons a direct cremation is better suited, either the person who has died didn’t prepare financially for their own demise or indeed the person left to arrange is not in a position to be able to pay for a traditional service. It could be that the deceased had no relatives or friends who had survived them or be able to attend due to distance and, in this situation, a conventional service may be unsuitable if a direct cremation would seem more suitable.

How Much Does a Direct Cremation cost and what does it include?

From £799, in addition to disbursements (Cremation cost plus Doctor’s cost where appropriate) – this choice includes the following:

  • Collection of the body from a location within a 10-mile radius (out of hours will be charged extra).
  • Conveying to a crematorium of our preference in our suitable vehicle.
  • Coffin made suitable for the cremation will be provided.

Is there a burial alternative?

Indeed, our “Direct Burial” service is also known as the “Direct to Graveside” service. A similar service, but rather than being cremated, the body is taken to the cemetery and buried without a service.

How much is the Direct Burial?

Burial option from Price £1,000 plus disbursements (burial plot and interment fee) – This option includes the following:

  • 10-mile pick (extra charge will be charged for out of hours).
  • Conveyance to the Brighton & Hove Burial ground in our Hearsette;
  • Coffin suitable for burial.

What about dressing our loved one or viewings?

The principle of direct cremation or burial is for little to no hassle to all parties, with a view to keeping issues to a minimum and, in particular, to keeping costs to a minimum. We find that very few people even like to see the deceased. Maybe 1 in 10 would wish to come to see their loved one.

In this case, we can provide personal care of your loved one for an additional fee, i.e. washing and dressing the body either in their own clothes or in calico cotton sheets (we tend not to preserve by embalming or use unnecessarily intrusive therapies unless we are required by law or formal request).

What happens after the cremation?

Returning to the idea of little or no hassle for both sides, and again, in order to keep things to a minimum, including prices, we usually ask clients to collect the ashes from the crematorium on their own. Or they might choose to have the ashes scattered in the crematorium remembrance garden. There is the choice that the ashes can be shipped to your door at an extra cost. When it comes to urns, there are many options available.

We usually advise clients to look on the internet, given the choice of urns available, and with our own individual tastes, we feel that choosing an urn is a more personal thing to do, and since there is usually no rush to do so, you can do all this in your time from the comfort of your own home.

How do I arrange cremation?

Just call us on the phone.

Usually, we would do that all over the phone, followed by email – we can also do a video conference with you, and if necessary, we might discuss meeting you personally, in your own house. We can’t do this for everyone but if you have trouble leaving your house, we can consider coming over. But you can first get in touch with us to discuss your requirements.

Testimonials

The reviews from our customers are of great importance to us.

We’d like to share them with you.

“Our very beloved family friend passed away in Hove on February 21. As we live in the north of England, we went on the website to search for a reputable funeral director in Hove. We chose Phillip of Sussex Funeral Services.

By the time we arrived in Hove, all the arrangements for the funeral had been made to our satisfaction, and any other help we needed was catered for to a very high standard. You helped us in a very sad day, giving us the time to remember and honour a loved one -you treated our Mum with such respect and dignity”. – K. Sherlock.
