We Provide Direct Cremation & Burial Services

Direct Cremation

Direct cremation not just a simple event, but it can also be private and easy on the finances. It’s more affordable to a lot of people. We still maintain the highest of standards, we still ensure that dignity for your loved one is upheld, and that we conduct ourselves in the most respectful manner. Our company’s philosophy is as ‘Caring, Compassion and Choice’

What is Direct Cremation?

The choice of ‘direct cremation’ will benefit those who may be worrying about affordability or want a smaller and more private funeral arrangement.

Our sensitive staff will gladly help you throughout, while preserving dignity and discretion. Direct cremation means a simple service which involves gathering your loved one from wherever they died, bringing them back to our premises and keeping them safe until cremation. On that day, we simply transport them, in a fitting coffin, to the crematorium of our choosing, which is typically Woodvale Crematorium. The cremation then takes place on that day with the cremated remains usually being ready for you to collect by the next working day.

Who is a direct cremation suited to?

Such a simple goodbye is appropriate for those who have opted to be cremated without a service, by their own preference and either recorded in a will or dying wishes, or they may have orally expressed it to their loved ones, maybe after, for example, donation of their body organs. For finance purposes, it may be that a direct cremation is best suited, because either the person who died did not plan himself financially or the person left to manage is not capable of paying for a conventional service. It may be that the deceased person didn’t have any family or friends having outlived them, or able to attend due to distance and, in that case, it seems inappropriate to have a traditional service, when a direct cremation might seem more fitting.

How Much Does a Direct Cremation cost and what does it include?

Costs are from £799, plus disbursements which includes cremation fee plus Doctor’s fee where applicable – this option comes with the following:

  • Collection of the body from a place within 10 miles (extra charges may be incurred for out of hours).
  • Conveying to a crematorium of our preference in our suitable vehicle.
  • A coffin appropriate for cremation shall be given.

Is there a burial alternative?

Indeed, our “Direct Burial” service is also known as the “Direct to Graveside” service. A similar service but rather than being taken to the crematorium, the deceased is taken to a cemetery and buried, without a service.

How much is the Direct Burial?

Burial selection starts from Price £1,000 including disbursements (burial plot and interment fee) – This option comes with the following:

  • Collection within 10 miles (out of hours will incur an extra charge).
  • Conveyance to the Brighton & Hove Burial ground in our Hearsette;
  • A coffin that is appropriate for burial.

What about dressing our loved one or viewings?

The idea of the direct cremation or burial was for little or No Fuss for both parties, with a view to keeping things to a minimum and in particular to keep costs to a minimum. We discover that very few people really want to view. Perhaps 1 in 10 would like to come to view their loved one.

In which case – For an extra fee we are able to provide personal care of your loved one, i.e. cleansing and dressing the body either in own clothes or in calico cotton sheeting (we prefer not to embalm or use unnecessary invasive treatments unless we are obliged to do so by law or formal request).

What happens after the cremation?

Going back to the idea of little or no hassle on all sides, and again, with a view to keeping it to a minimum, including expenses, we generally ask clients to collect the ashes directly from the crematorium. Or, instead, they may choose to have the ashes spread in the remembrance garden in the crematorium. There is an opportunity, for a small additional cost, to have the ashes shipped to your house. There is a variety of options open when it comes to urns.

We typically suggest to clients to search for urns on the Internet as there are usually lots of choices to choose from, and with our own particular tastes, we find that picking an urn is a more personal thing to do, and as there is usually no rush to do so, you can do all this in your time from the comfort of your own home.

How do I arrange cremation?

Simply ring us.

Usually, we would do that all over the phone, followed by email – we can also do a video conference with you, and if necessary, we might discuss meeting you personally, in your own house. We can’t do this for everyone but we can consider it if you have difficulties getting out and about your own home. But you can get started by calling to talk about your requirements.

Testimonials

The comments our customers make are of great importance to us.

We’d like to share them with you.

“Our very close family member died in Hove on 21 February. We went to the website to find a respectable funeral director in Hove, as we reside in the north of England. Sussex Funeral Services’ Phillip was our pick.

By the time we landed in Hove, all the burial arrangements had been carried out to our satisfaction, and all other help we wanted was catered for to a very high level. You helped us in a very sad day, giving us the time to remember and honour a loved one -you treated our Mum with such respect and dignity”. – K. Sherlock.
