In Five-Ash-Down, Sussex Funeral Services will assist you in making the appropriate funeral arrangements for your loved one’s death. We have a range of choices, from our traditional funerals to the easiest, ‘no fuss’ choices that will hopefully meet your needs.
Our ‘No-Fuss’ Funerals and ‘Direct Cremation’ or Burial’ options differ from the traditional funeral option in a significant way. These easy alternatives give you the possibility of holding a memorial or special ceremony at a later date.
Not only is direct cremation simple, but it is also be private and financially beneficial. This is more affordable for many people. We take our high standards very seriously; we also guarantee that your beloved’s dignity is upheld and we carry ourselves in the most respectful way. The ethos of our company is described as ‘Caring, Compassion and Choice.’
Our ‘direct cremation’ option will be more favourable to those who worry about affordability or wish to have a smaller and more private funeral arrangement.
Throughout this time our we will be there for you to help you, while maintaining dignity and discretion. The direct cremation means a simple service that involves us collecting your loved one from wherever they died, bringing back to our premises and keeping them safe until the day of their cremation. On the day, in a suitable coffin, we will simply move them to the crematorium of our choosing, usually the Woodvale Crematorium in Brighton. The cremation takes place on that day and the cremated remains are usually available to be collected on the next working day.
Such a simple goodbye is appropriate for those who have opted to be cremated without a service, by their own preference and either recorded in a will or dying wishes, or they may have orally expressed it to their loved ones, maybe after, for example, donation of their body organs. It may be that for financial reasons a direct cremation is better suited, either the person who has died didn’t prepare financially for their own demise or indeed the person left to arrange is not in a position to be able to pay for a traditional service. The deceased person may have had no relatives or friends who have survived them, or be able to attend due to distance and in this case, it seems inappropriate to provide a conventional service when a direct cremation would seem more suitable.
From £799 including disbursements (Cremation Fee plus Doctor Fee where applicable) – this selection includes the following:
Sure – our Direct Burial’ – also known as a service called Direct to Graveside’ is available. The deceased is taken to a cemetery and buried, without a ceremony, rather than being taken to the crematorium.
Burial option starting from Price £1,000 in addition to disbursements (burial plot and interment fee) – this service involves the following:
For all sides, the notion of immediate cremation or burial is to reduce fuss, avoid issues and, in particular, keeping costs to a minimum. We find that very few people even like to see the deceased. Maybe 1 in 10 would wish to come to see their loved one.
In such a case and for an additional cost, we are in a position to give personal care to your loved one, i.e. cleaning and dressing the body either in own clothes or in calico cotton sheets (we do not carry out embalming or use unnecessarily invasive solutions unless we are obligated to do so by legislation or by formal request).
Getting back to the idea of little or No Fuss for both parties, and again, with a view to keeping things to a minimum, including costs, we usually ask for clients to collect the ashes themselves from the crematorium. Or, instead, they may choose to have the ashes spread in the remembrance garden in the crematorium. There is an option to have the ashes delivered to your door for a further cost. When it comes to urns, there are many options available.
We generally tell clients to look on the internet for urns given the wide range of choices available, and we feel that choosing an urn is a more personal thing to do, based on individual tastes, and since there is usually no rush to do so, you can do all of this from the comfort of your own home in your time.
Just call us on the phone.
We can usually do it all over the phone, followed by email – we can video conference with you and we will consider visiting you personally, in your own house, if necessary. We can’t do this for everybody, but we do so if you’re having trouble getting out and leaving your home. But you can first get in touch with us to discuss your requirements.

We would like some to share with you.
“A very dear family friend of ours passed away on the 21st of February in Hove. We went on the website to search for a reputable funeral director in Hove as we live in the north of England. We selected Phillip of Sussex Funeral Services.
By the time we arrived in Hove, all the arrangements for the funeral had been made to our satisfaction, and any other help we needed was catered for to a very high standard. On a really sad day you supported us, allowing us the chance to recognise and support a loved one, you handled our mother with great reverence and dignity. — K. Sherlock.
