According to an act of Parliament known as the “Births and Deaths Registration Act 1953” it is the legal obligation of every parents to register their new born baby in England and Wales. This must not exceed 42 days from the day the baby is born. Both opposite sex and same-sex couples can register their babies at the Brighton Registry Office. Further details are available on the website.
Ceremonies such as marriage, civil partnership, vow renewals, civil naming, commitment and citizenship are performed at the office.
Weddings and unions are held at the Brighton Town Hall ceremony rooms. Couples can plan their special day with help from an administrator in the office. Whether it is a small informal occasion or the complete ceremony, with a groom’s man, bridesmaid, music and vow readings.
Civil Partnership ceremonies are organised for adult same-sex couples and are meant for their legal union registration. Conversions from civil partnership to a full marriage is also conducted at the Registry Office.
Married couples or those in a civil partnership can decide to renew their vows. Parents can also celebrate the birth of their new born baby by registering the name at the office. Since December 2003, it became compulsory for every new British citizen (except those below 18 years) to attend a ceremony to receive their naturalisation certificate.
When a death occurs, it is the responsibility of a family member, friend or someone present to report it. If it happened in the house, a doctor must be contacted to confirm the death and issue a Medical Certificate of Cause of Death. If the person died under unexpected circumstances, the Coroner’s office will be contacted for a post-mortem examination conducted.
It is mandatory to register a death within 5 days of its occurrence, unless it is being investigated then it might be delayed. This is done at the Register Office in the district where the death occurred. The Registry website lists documents required to complete a registration.
The Brighton Mortuary is located along Lewes Road, on the grounds of Extra Mural Cemetery. A funeral director may be hired for funeral arrangements. However, it is important to ensure they are part of a trade association such as National Association of Funeral Directors.
